bio - Samet Oymak

I am an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at the University of California, Riverside since 2018. I am also a cooperating faculty with Computer Science and Engineering. I am a recipient of an NSF CAREER award and multiple industry faculty research awards. I completed my undergraduate education at Bilkent University in 2009. I received my MS and PhD degrees from Caltech (in 2011 and 2015); where I was also awarded the Wilts Prize for the best thesis in Electrical Engineering. My PhD advisor is Babak Hassibi. Before joining UCR, I worked at The Voleon Group and Google. I was also a also a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley hosted by Ben Recht and The Simons Institute. My research lies at the confluence of machine learning, optimization, and statistics. I am broadly interested in finding principled solutions to contemporary machine learning and data science problems by using tools from mathematical optimization and statistics. Find my resume here.
