For python related work I use Conda. Conda is a blessing for python. For scientific computation python needs library like numpy which in turn depends on libraries written on C. As these tools are built with Linux on mind, they usually cause lot’s of issues while installing in windows. Conda resolves these dependencies very well which makes life much easier. The first step is to install conda for Windows. That can be done using this tutorial.

It is taken for granted that everything in python will be used in linux. So it is quite normal that something will break down while installing a tool in windows. The situation is improving lately, but still there are still lot’s of issues. So while trying to install pymatgen in a Windows machine I faced such issues. Even though they had instructions for windows, the commands there seems little bit outdated.

In our lab we usually run our calculations on Stampede and Gordon. Stampede being one of the fastest supercomputer in United States is very fast. But the queue in Stampede is very busy and as a result one has to wait a while before the calculation aka job begins. On the contrary Gordon is quite old and comparatively slower than Stampede. Due to these the job queue is much less crowded.

Using a CMS for a academic site is an overkill. An academic site can be built using a couple of pages with some links. Whereas a CMS like WordPress needs PHP, SQL database etc. which also involves a steep learning curve and a long time of scratching head to tweak things. So a viable alternative is to choose a static html engine. Example of such engines are: Jekyll, Sphinx, Pelican, Hugo.
